Week-1

Aug 1 (Mon) – Bike ride from Silverton – Class C

Our loop passes through the communities of Scotts Mills, Marquam, and Mt. Angel on relatively lightly-traveled rural roads. Distance: 42+ miles. Elevation gain: 2089’. Rest room & water at start, 8.8 miles, and 17.5 miles.

Aug 3 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch at a nearby cafe.
This week we will do the 4 T's hike.
Meet: at the MAX elevator across the street from the World Forestry center in Washington Park. This is a pay-to-park area, so do take public transportation if you can. Blue- or red-line Max to stop in tunnel, then the elevator at the west end of the platform. Or the 63 bus up from Providence Park.

Aug 3 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class A/B

We will hike from 6 pm until 8 PM-ish in Forest Park and the West Hills in two groups:
Class A: Approximately 4-5 miles with less than 500 foot elevation gain.
Class B: Approximately 6 miles with 500 - 800 foot elevation gain (not cumulative).
Depart: 6 PM sharp! from  Wallace Park between NW 25th and 26th on Raleigh.

Aug 5 (Fri) - Blue Lake Park Bike Ride - Class B

This ride starts at Gateway and soon gets onto bike paths - I205 path, Springwater Corridor, and Gresham-Fairview Trail before using city streets to go to Blue Lake Park, where we stop for lunch. We then continue along Marine Drive (road and path) to NE 33rd, from which we return through city streets to the start. The ride is 35 miles with 850 ft of ascent. For those wishing a shorter ride, there is the option to just come back from I205 and Marine Drive along the I205 bike path to the start, which cuts 10 miles and 350 ft ascent off the route.

Aug 10 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

Aug 10 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class A/B

We will hike from 6 pm until 8 PM-ish in Forest Park and the West Hills in two groups:

Class B: Approximately 6 miles with 500 - 800 foot elevation gain (not cumulative).

Aug 11 (Thu) Springwater Trail to Boring Ride - Class A

We will ride the eastern part of the Springwater Corridor, the part we never do! The ride is slightly uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back, all on bike path. Total distance is 20 miles. We will ride from SE 145th out to Boring, have lunch at the Not So Boring Bar and Grill and then ride back. Call or email with questions. I don’t ride in the rain or the excessive heat, so if weather is iffy, call my cell to check if ride is a go.
Depart: 10AM On SE 145th between the Springwater Corridor and SE Ellis St. This is just on the west side of Powell Butte Nature Park. Only way in is on SE Ellis St. Make sure you are NORTH of the Springwater Corridor. Google map the intersection of SE Ellis and SE 145th and you should find it. Make a RIGHT on 145th from Ellis and drive down to the bottom of the hill. Look for us right next to the entrance of the Springwater Corridor.

Aug 12 (Fri) Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing Party

Let's head to Rooster Rock State Park (exit 25 I-84) to watch and enjoy the wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower. The event, sponsored by OMSI, the Rose City Astronomers, the Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers and Oregon Parks and Recreations will have telescopes set up for attendees to use. OMSI staff will be presenting informal talks about the meteor shower, constellations, and the summer sky.
Meet to organize carpools: 8 PM at Gateway Transit Center Return time to be negotiated with drivers.

Aug 14 (Sun) - Puget Island and White Tailed Deer Sanctuary bike - Class B

This is an "B" ride of 37.2 flat miles. Puget Island Ride with GPS : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14894959
Meet: We will meet on Puget Island near the ferry terminal and be ready to depart at approximately 10:30 am.
The Oscar B Ferry departs from the Westport (WA) end every hour on the hour. So you would want to be there before the 10 AM departure. Allow time for parking and getting you bikes on to the ferry. Cost is $2 per bike.

Distance from Portland City Center to Westport is 72 miles. 1 hr 20 mins driving time Pack a lunch, snacks and plenty of water.

Aug 14 (Sun) - Trails Club Picnic

The Trails Club August 2016 Picnic will be held at Sellwood Park, (see map), near SE 7th Ave. and Miller St. in SE Portland. This is a potluck event, although punch, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc., will also be provided. Parking is at the north end of park and on-street, and easy drop-off and pick-up is available. A number of trails are within easy access. Oaks Bottom is a wildlife refuge and facilities for group viewing are just off the trail that goes around the lake, which is bounded on the northwest side by the Springwater Corridor.
The picnic starts at 11:30 AM Bring a potluck dish.

Aug 18 (Thu) Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway Bike Class A

Cancelled by leader due to the heat

The ride will be 16 miles out and back along the Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway, Vancouver,WA.
Depart: 10 am from Burnt Bridge Ck Trailhead just past the intersection NW Bernie on NW Lakeshore Dr. You can park on Bernie. Travel I-5, take exit 4 to west 78 St. & south on Lakeshore Dr.

Aug 19-20 (Fri -Sat) Dollar Lake Backpack Class A-B

We’ll access the Timberline Trail from the Vista Ridge Trail on the north side of Mount Hood. Trail goes thru the area burned by the Dollar Lake Fire a few years back, and the views are excellent once we reach the Timberline Trail at Wyeast Basin. Our hike to Dollar Lake will take us ¼ to 1/3 of a mile off the Timberline Trail toward Mount Hood, just below Barrett Spur. We should have time to explore Barrett Spur or Elk Cove. One way mileage is around 3.5 to 4 miles with approximately 2000 feet of elevation gain.

Aug 19-21 (Fri-Sun) Nesika Work Trip

We have some emergency repairs to do on cupola of main lodge. The siding up there will be replaced due to damage by ravens and we have some water leakage to repair. We will continue to work on the front porch. Preparing to pour the new porch in September. We will need help moving materials into the lodge. We will be back on road clearing and filling pot holes and moving wood. There is always work to be done. Please come and enjoy our camaraderie and spirit of unity at Nesika. We also have a great history display we are working on including Fern Anderson stories from her youth.

Aug 20 (Sat) Sandy River Exploration Bike- Class C

Join me for a ride that follows the Sandy River from its mouth to Dodge Park, and crosses it twice. We will start at Lewis & Clark State Park near Troutdale, head south on the Historic Columbia River Highway for a few miles before crossing the river on the Stark Street Bridge, ride up and down the hills and dales and across the farmland above the river, then cross the river once more at Dodge Park, where we turn around. Total distance is approximately 30 miles, with cumulative elevation gain about 1,800 feet. Be prepared for some short but steep hills. Optional lunch in Troutdale after the ride.
Meet: 9 AM at Lewis & Clark State Park near Troutdale, Exit 18 from I-84. Go south after exiting freeway; the parking lot is just past the railroad underpass on the left. No parking fee.

Aug 20 (Sat) Wildwood Recreation Area Hike - Class A

Note: Start time changed due to the heat

I will lead a slow, leisurely hike at BLM's Wildwood Recreation Area near Hoodland. We will hike the Wetland Boardwalk, Cascade Streamwatch Trail, and the Old Mill Trail taking in the art and signboards offering information. Check out BLM web site and look over the park brochure for more information. Hike about 4 miles. This is a wonderful park, so if you have never been here, it is worth a visit.
This hike precedes the Hike and Dine event at Tyee. Hope to see you there! Hike fees $1 member, $2 non-member.
Meet at: 9:30 AM by day use restrooms inside the park. Parking fee $5, per car, or use federal senior pass. Other passes may qualify. Bring a sack lunch, and we will enjoy a picnic by the river, and then hike.

Aug 20-21 (Sat - Sun) Tyee Lodge Hike and Dine

Enjoy a Saturday dinner of tacos: warm tortillas with all the fixings including guajillo chile ground beef, fish, or vegetarian. Moderately spiced Spanish rice, refritos, and corn on the cob. Dessert: triple orange Mexican wedding cookies. Breakfast: leftovers from dinner and scrambled eggs and fruit.
Cost: $13 if just coming for dinner. If spending the night, $26.

July Nesika Work trip

Doug Atterbury and sons Derek and Justin coming to Nesika after 10 year absence to help on work trip. Will be back next work trip for some emergency repairs on main lodge cupula triggered by raven.

July work trip was very prosperous. We finished replacing the roof on the women's dorm with the help of Bob Horn, Bill Rude, Jeffrey Andrews, Ron Kinder, Glen Conrad, Doug May, Abel ___,Jeff Lawton and Tim Kutsha. Looks beautiful. Merrill Hugo was able to fill the front porch of main lodge with rock with the help of Randy Dietrick, Kira, Kathrine, Caroline Van Orden, Glen Conrad and Mike Harrison. Next step is to pour cement. Road work, trail work, Point was made ready for Susan Taylors wedding; beautified and benches painted and repaired. We signed 7 new membership applications.
