All visitors and Trails Club members are encouraged to enjoy the great Northwest outdoors by selecting a hike, bike ride or other event from this calendar. Gentle Reminders provides explanation of hike difficulty and hike guideline. Detail description of common meeting is available at Meeting Places.

Week-1

Aug 1 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park.
This week we will meet at Friendly House on NW Thurman and 26th for a 9:30 AM departure. The hike will probably be on lower and upper Macleay.

Aug 1 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class B

We will start at 6 PM sharp and hike until 8 PM-ish in Forest Park and the West Hills. Please carry a flashlight or headlamp and dress for changeable weather.
Meet: at Wallace Park between NW 25th and 26th on Raleigh.
Cost: Free for Trails Club members; $2 non-members

Aug 4 (Sat) Day hike from Timberline Lodge to ZigZag Overlook - Class A

This is a 4.6 mile hike with 500 ft. elevation gain. We will be going up to the Timberline trail via the Mountaineer trail and then heading west to a spectacular viewpoint of the meadows of Paradise Park and of Mississippi Head. Be aware that most of the elevation is gained on the way back, and that you will be hiking at elevation. Bring lunch, water, and sun protection. This hike is planned in conjunction with the Art's Weekend at Tyee, but is open to all. It will also qualify as a membership hike.
Meet 8:00 AM at Gateway, Diana Forester (503-422-8896) will meet hikers in town. She is staying for dinner at the lodge so if you want to return to town earlier, you will need to provide your own transportation.
Or at 9:30 AM, join the hikers from Tyee.
If you want to stay for dinner (or the evening) at Tyee, contact Celine Stroinski (503-239-6950) by Thursday, Aug. 3.

Aug 3-5 (Fri-Sun) Arts weekend at Tyee

Come to Tyee with art supplies of your choice and enjoy the 'paint out'. Reserve breakfasts and dinners if you like. Lunches on your own as we will be out recording nature. Last year the lupine filling a meadow up West Leg Road was fantastic. Possible hike also.
Tyee will be open Fri. noon till Sun 3 PM.

Aug 5 (Sun) Canby to Sawtell Hill Bike - Class C

We will ride mostly on rural roads past farms and countryside going from Canby to Mollala. Then we will ascend Sawtell Hill which is a strenuous 1100 ft climb, in about 6 miles. As we go up, the scenery becomes more forested and there are beautiful views. 48 miles round trip.

Aug 8 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park.
This week we will hike to Council Crest park. Please meet at the intersection of SW Spring and SW 18th, ready to depart at 9:30 AM. There are no restrooms at the beginning of the hike, and none until we get to Council Crest. There are restrooms at the bottom of the hill at Vista and Burnside. If you need an address, 2440 SW Vista Ave, Portland, OR 97201 is a block from the start of the hike.

Aug 9 (Thu) Fern Hill Wetlands to Banks Bike Ride – Class B

Postponed due to excessive heat forcast

This is the middle section of the Tualatin Valley Scenic Bike Ride leading us through rolling farm land on country backroads. The ride is about 34 miles starting and ending at the Fern Hill Wetlands with the opportunity to explore this area on a very short hike. Lunch will be at the Banks City Park.
Depart: 9 AM from Fern Hill Wetlands, 1399 SW Fern Hill Rd, Forest Grove, 97116.

Aug 12 (Sun) Willamette Valley Bike Ride - Class A/B

This ride will utilize the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway south of Champoeg State Park. There are two routes with the same beginning and end pieces, with the longer route adding 16 additional miles in the middle. The route is largely flat on rural roads with scenic distant views of the Cascade foothills. The shorter ride is 27 miles and the longer one is 43 miles, both being relatively flat. E-mail leader to indicate that you are planning to ride (the ride may be rescheduled if weather is poor), which length ride you plan to do, and for directions to the start point.

Aug 15 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park.
This week we will meet at Friendly House at NW Thurman and 26th for a 9:30 AM departure. We will hike through the 3 Pearl district parks, north park blocks, and South Park blocks for the noon concert on SW Main between the theaters. It will be The Beat Goes On marching band (Audrey on drums). You may wish to pick up a TriMet ticket to shorten the trip back to the cars.

Aug 16 (Thu) Springwater Trail to Boring Ride - Class A

We will ride the eastern part of the Springwater Corridor, the part we never do! The ride is slightly uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back, all on bike path. Total distance is 20 miles. We will ride from SE 145th out to Boring, have lunch at the Not So Boring Bar and Grill and then ride back. Call or email with questions.
I don’t ride in the rain or the excessive heat, so if weather is iffy, call my cell to check if ride is a go.
Depart: 10 AM On SE 145th between the Springwater Corridor and SE Ellis St. This is just on the west side of Powell Butte Nature Park. Only way in is on SE Ellis St. Make sure you are NORTH of the Springwater Corridor. Google map the intersection of SE Ellis and SE 145th and you should find it. Make a RIGHT on 145th from Ellis and drive down to the bottom of the hill. Look for us right next to the entrance of the Springwater Corridor.

Aug 17-22 (Fri-Wed) PCT Jefferson Park Backpack

This trip is full.

Join TCO leaders Roger and Karen Anderson on a 5-days backpack around one of the most scenic Oregon PCT section Jefferson Park. We will start our backpack at Big Lake SDA Youth Camp on Friday night, do a leisure hike to Santiam Pass on the 1st day. Go to Minto Pass on Day 2, and then on Day 3, Shale Lake, Day 4, Jefferson Park, and our final day we will leave Jefferson Park via trail 3375 South Breitenbush Trail.
Mileage: Day 1 = 6 miles, Day 2 = 10.4, Day 3 = 12.1, Day 4=10.6, Day 5 = 8.3
Shale Lake and Jefferson Park areas are so popular it is by permit only camping.

Week-4

Aug 22 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park.
This week's hike will begin at Friendly House at NW Thurman and 26th at 9:30 AM. Due to remodeling, the building will be closed, but we will pass by 26th and Raleigh if restrooms are required. We will head up Pettygrove to Cumberland, avoiding the stairs, and follow the Cumberland trail through the shade, visiting the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and returning down Wildwood past Balch Creek.

Aug 22 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class B

Aug 24-25 (Fri-Sat) Elk Meadows Backpack Class A

We’ll hike approximately 3.5 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain to Elk Meadows on the east side of Mount Hood. Return mileage out will be the same in reverse. This area has great views of the east side of Mount Hood. We’ll find a good spot to set up camp close to the Meadows, leaving time for a day hike up to Gnarl Ridge and Lamberson Butte, about two and one half miles and 800 feet away. Crossing over Newton Creek one the way up could be over logs, rocks, or quick ford. Total number of hikers limited to six to reduce impact. Leader goes at one to one and a half miles per hour up hill.

Aug 25 (Sat) Boring-Redland Bike - Class C

Join me on a ride with a wide variety of terrain and vistas. From Milwaukie, we head north to the Springwater Trail and follow it to its end in Boring. From there, we continue south to Barton, where we cross the Clackamas River. We then work our way up to Redland on quiet back roads, and then once in Redland it’s all downhill to Oregon City. From there, we make our way to the bike/ped bridge over the Clackamas River at Cross Park in Gladstone before heading back to Milwaukie on the Trolley Trail. Total distance is approximately 45 miles, with cumulative elevation gain about 1,600 feet. Optional lunch in downtown Milwaukie after the ride.
Meet: 9 AM at Milwaukie Riverfront Park, McLoughlin Blvd and Washington St. (there is a traffic signal.) From the north, enter the parking lot on the next driveway after the signal. Coming from the south, take the turn lane before the Washington St. signal.

Aug 29 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park.
This week we will meet in Washington Park at the west end of the Max elevators across from the World Forestry Center for a 9:30 departure to the 4-Ts trail. Parking in the Zoo lot costs $2 an hour or $8 for all day. Take the Max if you can.

Aug 30 (Thu) Milwaukie-West Linn-Tryon Creek Ride – Class B

This 25 mile in-town ride is mainly flat, some nice bike trails and some roads with bike lanes. There is some real undulation and uphill through the park, its shady until you get to Terwilliger, where we will have a good uphill to the summit at Riverside Cemetery. Then comes the fun ride down to the Sellwood Bridge and back to the start. This loop is 25 miles.
Meet: 9:30 AM Milwaukie Riverfront Park, Jefferson Boat Ramp at McLaughlin & Jefferson Sts.
